The Bible, originating from Koine Greek "τὰ βιβλία, tà biblía," is a collection of sacred texts in both Judaism and Christianity. While the term "Bible" is used by both religions, the contents of their respective canonical texts differ. Each religious group includes different books in their canons, arranged in various orders and sometimes supplemented with additional material.
The Hebrew Bible, known as the Tanakh, consists of three parts: the Torah (meaning "teaching" or "law"), the Nevi'im (meaning "prophets"), and the Ketuvim (meaning "writings"). It comprises twenty-four books.
Christian Bibles vary from the sixty-six books in the Protestant canon to the eighty-one books in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church canon. They are divided into two parts. The first part is the Old Testament, containing at least the twenty-four books of the Hebrew Bible, arranged differently. The Catholic Church and Eastern Christian churches also include certain deuterocanonical books and passages in their Old Testament canon. The second part is the New Testament, which consists of twenty-seven books: the four Canonical Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, twenty-one Epistles or letters, and the Book of Revelation.
In the 2nd century BCE, Jewish groups referred to these Bible books as "holy," and now Christians commonly refer to both the Old and New Testaments as "The Holy Bible" (in Greek, "τὰ βιβλία τὰ ἅγια, tà biblía tà ágia") or "the Holy Scriptures" (in Greek, "η Αγία Γραφή, e Agía Graphḗ"). Many Christians consider the entire canonical text of the Bible to be divinely inspired. The oldest surviving complete Christian Bibles are Greek manuscripts from the 4th century, while the oldest Tanakh manuscript in Hebrew and Aramaic dates back to the 10th century CE. However, an early 4th-century Septuagint translation can be found in the Codex Vaticanus.
The Bible was divided into chapters in the 13th century by Stephen Langton and into verses in the 16th century by French printer Robert Estienne. Today, it is commonly cited by book, chapter, and verse. With estimated annual sales of 25 million copies, the Bible has had a significant influence on literature and history, particularly in Western societies where it was the first mass-printed book.
